CO2 Laser

Southern California Eye Physicians & Surgeons utilizes the most advanced technology, including the Luxar CO2 scalpel laser. The waveguide CO2 laser is very helpful in removing moles, bumps, skin tags and warts. The 10.6 micron CO2 laser is regarded as superior to conventional scalpel techniques because it precisely targets only the affected area. Due to its ability to achieve hemostasis and a very thin (50 microns) zone of thermal necrosis, the CO2 laser allows for a more conservative excision/ablation than a standard blade. The removal of skin lesions with the CO2 laser often does not require suturing. The area treated with the CO2 laser heals by secondary intention which results in smooth new skin. There is less wound contraction and scarring due to the reduced amount of myofibroblasts at the surgical site. The small amount of necrosis allows for a faster, easier recovery for the patient. Patients often report less postoperative pain with laser wounds. The laser kills bacteria and seals blood vessels as it cuts, reducing bleeding. This results in improved visibility of the surgical field, allowing the surgeon to cut more conservatively and precisely.
